The Paranaguá and Antonina Port Administration (Appa) has recorded a 50% increase in the volume of solid waste collected in the port area. In April, Appa reached the milestone of 284 tons of materials collected, including waste that falls from trucks and is collected from access roads located around the port area. In the same period last year, 184 tons of waste were collected.
According to the CEO of Appa, Luiz Henrique Dividino, the numbers reflect the investments and operational reinforcement made to ensure the cleanliness of the streets and avenues in the Porto Organizado area.
“At the beginning of this year, with the hiring of more efficient and sustainable sweeping machines, we have already recorded an increase in the volume of waste collected and this amount has been increasing monthly,” said Dividino.
TECHNOLOGY
The Port Authority maintains four sweeping machines daily to clean the Organized Port area. The new machines have a water vaporization system in front of the brushes, which allows for greater efficiency in the sweeping process, in addition to significantly minimizing the amount of dust that is dispersed into the atmosphere.
Another advantage of the new equipment is that they have closed cabins with air conditioning, protecting and providing more comfort to the driver operating the sweeper.
According to Appa's environmental director, Bruno Silveira Guimarães, the continuous sweeping action also contributed to increasing the volume of waste collected. “The technology used in the Port of Paranaguá is widely used in first world countries, with efficient results for cleaning public roads, sidewalks and squares,” he says.
All waste collected during sweeping is deposited in non-recyclable waste bins.
In addition to sweeping and correctly disposing of waste, the Port of Paranaguá has 60 selective collection points for recyclable materials spread throughout the port area. Sweeping takes place from 7 am to 11 am and from 13 pm to 17 pm.
