A survey conducted by the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of Paraná (Fecomércio PR) and Sebrae/PR, indicated that Children's Day will have a good return for merchants, since 74,4% of Paraná residents intend to give gifts on this date. This is the highest percentage in the historical series of the survey, which began in 2016.
According to the Business Development Coordinator at Fecomércio PR, Rodrigo Schmidt, the greater intention to give gifts this year on Children's Day can be attributed, among other factors, to the greater circulation of people compared to the previous two years, as well as the perception of an improvement in the macroeconomic situation by the population, with the job market recovering.
“There is also a greater willingness to celebrate at this time, which was somewhat suppressed during the most critical period of the pandemic. Children, in particular, were greatly impacted during this period, but there was, in general terms, a strengthening of relationships between parents and children, which explains this greater willingness to celebrate this date that is so important for national retail, which translates into gifts, outings, promotion of games, trips, thus boosting the consumption of goods and services”, reiterates Rodrigo.
Gift type
With 55,6%, toys are the main type of gift chosen, but they lost some of their prominence compared to last year, when they received 62,9% of mentions. On the other hand, clothing and footwear saw an increase compared to 2021, going from 27,8% to 45,7%.
Educational games, which were in high demand last year, with 30,9% of mentions, only had 9,6% this year. Electronics such as video games, notebooks, tablets and cell phones are expected to see an increase in sales, rising from 5% in 2021 to 8,5% this year. Giving children money to choose whatever they want will be the option for 7,5%. Books and the like, on the other hand, have fallen considerably, falling from 17,4% last year to 5,1% this year on Children's Day.
The value of the gift is the highest ever recorded by the survey. The average ticket will be R$156,58. The amount is even higher than before the pandemic – in 2019 the average spent on gifts for children was R$90,33.
Most purchases – 51,2% – will be made in the week leading up to Children's Day. Consumers who will make the purchase on the same day account for 21,3%; those who will make the purchase 8 to 15 days in advance are 14,3%, and those who have already bought the gift total 13,2%.
Paranagua
The businessman and director of the Retail Chamber of Commerce of Aciap (Commercial, Industrial and Agricultural Association of Paranaguá), Anwar Hamud Hamud, informed that an agreement made between the store owners made it possible for the stores to open last Friday, the 7th, and on the 12th, next Wednesday, Children's Day, municipal and national holidays, respectively.
Therefore, some stores will be open this Wednesday, the 12th, from 10 am to 17 pm. The expectation is for a lot of movement, since it is the beginning of the month and many workers have received their payment, as Anwar stated.
“In comparative terms, the date was never representative in sales, as the segment had lost strength to technological gifts, smartphones, tablets and other products. After the pandemic, the date proved to be very important and that toys need special attention. In addition, the date is an opportunity for retailers to make up for lost time due to pandemic restrictions,” Anwar highlighted.
