Municipality has the lowest HDI in the region
This week, the Federal University of Paraná – Litoral (UFPR Litoral) announced the donation of 125 liters of 70% liquid alcohol and 60 fabric masks to residents in Guaraqueçaba. The products were produced by professors, students and technicians at the university. The municipality was chosen because it has the lowest Human Development Index (HDI) in the region, and therefore has citizens who need more intense support from the Government to prevent and combat the new Coronavirus.
“In addition to the economic challenges, families in the region and the local government need to face mobility difficulties. UFPR Litoral works in the municipality on different teaching, research and extension activities and, at this time of pandemic, is strengthening this partnership,” the university’s press office reports.
The director of the Coastal Sector of UFPR, Elisiane Tiepolo, states that the university is fulfilling its social role during this time of the Covid-19 pandemic. “We have researchers who fight for science. We have shown that without public universities we would be at the mercy of the disease and death caused by fake news and unscientific approaches to combating the pandemic,” she adds.
“Sewing Health” Collective

Following guidance from the Ministry of Health (MS) for the population to use homemade masks to prevent COVID-19, the collective “Costurando Saúde” (Sewing Health) was formed, linked to UFPR Litoral. “The group is made up of teachers, technicians, students, family members and community members linked to UFPR Litoral. The homemade masks produced by the collective will be donated to the community. On Monday, the 13th, the first 60 masks were donated to the city of Guaraqueçaba,” the press office reports.
“Based on the desire to see everyone protected, each mask we make carries with it the message that by protecting ourselves we can protect everyone. And also the message that if the virus is contagious, solidarity is contagious,” says Elisiane Tiepolo, who in addition to being the director of UFPR Litoral is one of the volunteer seamstresses.
